Forum: GratefulDead Subject: The Deadhead's Taping Addendum

In an effort to find this out of print book I am looking for any info anyone might have. So far, this is what Ive done...

Called Book Masters and they told me the account was closed and they have not printed the book since 2002. They gave me an Email and phone for Pepper Tonic productions in San Francisco and neither is current or working.

I also found two different Emails for Michael Getz and one for Brian Dyke and none of them worked either.

Searched every major new and used bookstore as well as Ebay and anything else I could squeeze out of the net...

My search has come up empty and I want this book. Does anyone know where I might find this book? Here is the exact info...

Publisher: Pepper Tonic Productions; 1st edition (2001)
ISBN-10: 097162190X
ISBN-13: 978-0971621909

If you register at http://www.abebooks.com/ , you can set up a "want" request. Whenever a secondhand book dealer posts a copy for sale, you'll get an email. No obligation to buy. Thousands of established book dealers around the world post their stock there. I've used it for years and never had a bad experience with a book dealer.

One more thing, when I spoke with the girl at Book Masters she told me that at least a couple times a month someone calls her looking for the Addendum. The music truly never stops...

A couple of years ago I got Volume 1, 1959 to 1974 on ebay for a buck. It is the Owl Book edition printed in 1998.

No kidding. For just a brief moment I thought about listing mine. Those three books and the The American Book of the Dead by Oliver Trager are my favorite reference books.

The American Book of the Dead is selling used for $1.95 or new for $7.99. It goes over the history behind the songs, best show recommendations for a song, and band members - both GD and artists of songs they covered.

The Addendum must've had a limited run, I can't imagine PepperTonic is a very large publisher.... I wonder why the Holt publishers didn't do this volume since they did the first three?

Anyway, the Addendum has a very valuable interview with Marty Weinberg (14 big pages) and a listing of his few surviving reels. There's also a Vault interview with Jeffrey Norman. There's a list of corrections to the first 3 volumes.
About a hundred pages are devoted to a tribute to Dick Latvala (who'd just died), lots of interviews with people who knew him, including several tapers & Dead insiders, so there's actually a lot more information in them than you might think. (There's also a rather random ten-page list of his favorite performances.)
Whatever you might think of Dick's picks & preferences, the guy leaked literally hundreds of Dead shows that we otherwise wouldn't have. The number of shows that surfaced from Dick's "friends" when he died (a large number of them reviewed here) is astounding.

These are the pre-'75 shows reviewed in the Addendum - most of these are fairly lengthy, song-by-song reviews - some of them are show upgrades or rethoughts on vol. 1 reviews. Many of these are tapes that had surfaced in just three years since vol. 1 had been published....

Some of the tapes listed above I supplied. Friends of mine wrote many of the reviews in all this series. Good interviews - I'm even mentioned in one so I'm naturally partial. Fun books to read and/or do research if you are so inclined. My advice - collect the great. You won't have time for the rest. The issue is finding what is great to your ear. I have all these books and I can tell you while they are fun - you have to be pretty obsessed to pay what some people are asking. There are other good resources as well for those just getting into this wonderful obsession.

I got the first 3 volumes as they were released with Xmas of Bday $$$ but I never even heard of the Addendum until it was OOP. =-(

Wish I too could find a copy to make my collection complete. I never realized they had all gone OOP until a few years ago I went to either replace my Vol.1 I loaned to a friend years ago or buy him a copy.

Guess I'll have to make sure I get these listed on my renters insurance!

I know Brian Dyke, and I sent him an email on your behalf. I have been a long time lurker here, but I am not new to the scene. You can email me at stdilbertatgmaildotcom This is a long shot at best, but we can only hope you get what you are seeking.
